So you’ve signed up your new clients, and you can’t wait to share with them everything that you know.
But wait.
To quote the words of a well-known proverb: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
What does this mean?
My research indicate that this expression is connected to a story from the 1880s, which includes the line: “He certainly doesn’t practise his precepts, but I suppose the Patron meant that if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.”
Do you ever get clients like that?
Your hungry clients like fish. But fishing?
It’s good that they can depend on you, and want your guiding hand. But sometimes it too much for you. There are certain things that your current and prospective clients should work out for themselves.
Your time doesn’t come cheap, and you probably don’t charge for every second that they take from yourself, your family, your friends, and your other clients.
So, what’s the solution?
From now on, start with your new clients. Teach new clients to fish.

Do you have adequate resources that can help, such as an informative blog that really educates?
Do you offer paid consultation sessions, which provide plenty of value by teaching your clients everything you know?
If so, are such resources clear from your website content?
There are only so many fish that you can give away, and yet feed yourself and your family.
Therefore, “give a client a fish…”. You get the picture. You have the expertise.
